Primary Election information

May 27, 2012
Reinbeck Courier

The June 5, 2012, Primary Election is an election by members of the Republican and Democratic Parties for the purpose of nominating each party's candidates for the November 6, 2012, general election.

Candidates for all political offices (except the President and Vice President) which will be filled at the November general election will be nominated at the primary election.

At the June 5 primary election, you can vote only for the candidates on the party ballot of which you have declared to be a member on election day. You are not allowed to "cross-over" between parties at a primary election. Independent voters (those who have not declared party affiliation with either the Republican or Democratic party) must declare a party affiliation in order to vote in the primary election. There are two ways to change or declare your party affiliation:

On primary Election Day (June 5, 2012) you can change or declare a party affiliation at the polls when you go to vote. (If you vote by absentee ballot, your application for the ballot must include the party's ballot that you are requesting.)

If you are currently registered to vote and would like to change or declare your party affiliation before Election Day, complete a voter registration form and return it to the County Auditor's Office by the pre-registration deadline of May 26. Section 4 of the voter registration form entitled "Political Affiliation" is where you mark your party preference, either Republican or Democratic. A supply of voter registration forms is available at most city halls and libraries in the county. Voter registration forms are also available at the Grundy County Auditor's Office or on the Grundy County website The completed forms should be delivered or mailed to the Grundy County Auditor, 706 G Ave., Grundy Center, IA 50638-1496.

If voters have questions about how they are currently registered for party affiliation, they can stop in or call the Grundy County Auditor's Office at 319-824-3122.

The "SAME DAY VOTER REGISTRATION" law allows a person who is eligible to register to vote, to register and vote on election day (June 5, 2012) by going to the polling place for the voting precinct in which the individual resides and completing a voter registration application, making a written oath, and providing proof of identity and residence. This "SAME DAY VOTER REGISTRATION" procedure may slow up the voting experience for voters choosing to wait until June 5 to register and vote at the polling site.

To make the voting experience easier and less time consuming on June 5, Grundy County Auditor Rhonda R. Deters recommends that you pre-register to vote with her office by the May 26, 2012, 5:00 PM deadline. By pre-registering, your name will already appear on the election register at your polling site, and you will avoid the time consuming process required for SAME DAY VOTER REGISTRATION. If voters are currently registered to vote, there is no need to re-register to participate in the June 5 primary election.

If, after a person votes on June 5, he or she wants to change the political affiliation back to his or her previous party, forms will be available at the polls for him or her to complete and return to the County Auditor's Office. These forms must be returned to the County Auditor's Office and will not be accepted at the polls.

Voting by absentee ballot may be an option for those voters who will be unable to vote at the polls on primary Election Day, June 5, 2012. Qualified voters may vote by absentee ballot in one of two ways:

To vote early by absentee ballot, voters may stop at the Grundy County Auditor's Office on the 2nd floor of the Grundy County Courthouse during normal business hours Monday through Friday (8:00 AM to 4:30 PM). The Auditor's Office will also be open on Saturday, May 26, and Saturday, June 2, for early voting. The last day to vote by absentee ballot at the Auditor's Office is June 4. With appropriate identification, an eligible elector who is not currently registered to vote may do so at the same time he or she is casting an absentee ballot in person.

To vote early by mail, absentee ballot request forms are on the Grundy County under the heading "Where do I .?" Click on "Vote Absentee" to download an application form to request an absentee ballot. The completed forms should be dropped off or mailed to the Grundy County Auditor, 706 G Ave., Grundy Center, IA 50638-1496. The last day to request an absentee ballot by mail is June 1 at 5:00 PM.

Absentee ballots returned by hand may be delivered to the County Auditor's Office at the Courthouse until 9:00 PM on June 5. Absentee ballots may not be turned in at the polling place, except to be surrendered and voided, in which case the voter would then vote at the polls.

Absentee ballots returned by mail must be postmarked by June 4 and received before noon on June 11.

Polls will be open at 7:00 AM and close at 9:00 PM on Primary Election Day, June 5.
