The party lights were strung, the lanterns were lit, and Pandora played Seventies music. Eighteen classmates began to arrive at the home of Julie Moser Bachman at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 15 for their 40th class reunion of the Reinbeck High School class of 1972. This was the first time the group had met in twenty years. The familiar camaraderie that was once so matter-of-fact was evident from the start for this group that had spent their childhood and adolescent school years (1959 to 1972) together. They caught up on everyone's lives to the present-most still working, some retired; children AND grandchildren stories abounded; and plans for the future. The subject of the announcement of the Kennedy assassination right after they returned from the noon recess was brought up, and they all shared recollections from each person's perspective of this marker event in lives. The class was in fourth grade at the time (either Mrs. Kneeland's or Miss Elliason's class). School stories (especially the high jinks) and many teachers were fondly remembered. The class also toasted three departed class members: Janice Lorenz Van Hauen, Rick Murphy and LuAnn Freed Schreck. As all good things do, the party came to a close at 12:30 a.m. Before they departed, they made plans for the 45th and 50th class reunions. The plan is to keep them on a weekend in September (not as busy during this time of year) that is agreeable to the majority. Walt Cheeseman will host the 45th and Curt Plaehn will host the 50th. Tim Robinson will again be in charge of the communications and organization, and Randy Staker will be in charge of the ice! Robinson received an e-mail from Lori Peters Craun the day after the reunion, and I felt that she summed up the evening well, "Good company, good weather, good food. Couldn't have asked for a better night."
Tim Robinson, Cindy Petersen High and Julie Moser Bachman were in charge of this year's reunion. They also received a call from Danny Westergaard in Casa Grande, Ariz., who was unable to attend the reunion. He visited with everyone at the reunion by phone and guaranteed that he would be at the 45th reunion in 2017.
Those attending the reunion were Tim Robinson, Des Moines; Julie Moser Bachman, Scott Lowe, Karol Linder, Bill Miller, Dennis Bolt, Walt Cheeseman and Randy Staker, all of Reinbeck; Lori Peters Craun and Marcia Giesking Seymour of Marshalltown; Cindy Petersen High of Dysart; Virginia Smith Grimm of Grundy Center; Kay Barnes Radl of Guttenberg; Jimmy Makedonski of Waterloo; Lynn Schneider of Cedar Falls; Craig Smith of Evansdale; Dick Dirks of Ashland, Neb.; and Curt Plaehn of Gladbrook.
