Attend wellness fair for New Year’s health

January 6, 2013
Reinbeck Courier

More than thirty exhibitors featuring local resources for wellness will be on display Saturday, January 12 at the annual Wellness Fair at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital, sponsored by the county Wellness Coalition and Grundy County Farm Bureau. New to the 2013 event are six educational mini-sessions, featuring topics from preventing back pain to streamlined family meal preparation.

Exhibits will be open from 7:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m., located throughout the hospital and the adjacent medical office building. Low cost blood screenings, free blood pressure checks by Grundy Center Family Medicine, and hearing screenings are among the health services available. Healthy breakfast samples will be available in the hospital's East J Caf. The Wellness Coalition has assembled gift packages that will be given as prizes throughout the morning.

"It's typical for people to begin the New Year with good intentions for improving their health," remarks Wellness Coalition member and hospital Nutrition and Wellness Manager Crystal Petersen. "We've assembled a variety of resources to make it easy for people to receive the help they need meeting their goals, including goals for weight loss, exercise, and general safety and wellness." In addition, Petersen notes that the Wellness Fair provides an opportunity for low-cost blood screening so attendees can begin the new year with information about their key numbers, including general chemistry and complete cholesterol, prostrate health for men, (PSA test) and thyroid screening (TSH). Hemogram and hemoglobin A1C testing are also available for a modest cost. Fasting after midnight is required for the lipid panel (cholesterol, LDL, HDL and triglycerides).

Participants will be able to sign up for the Live Healthy Iowa 100 Day Challenge, reserve a plot in the Grundy Community Gardens, learn about Blue Zones community certification, emergency preparedness tips, radon safety, dental health, spiritual health, receive a chair massage and much more.

The free educational mini-sessions begin at 7:00 a.m. in the hospital's Education Room and topics change each thirty minutes. The schedule includes:

- Back Care Basics from Physical Therapist Chris Wiedman

- Interactive Yoga, presented by the Grundy Family YMCA

- CPR Refresher, Grundy County Public Health nurse Gloria Dielschneider

- Cook Once, Eat Twice, Grundy Center Schools Family & Consumer Science instructor Joan Schuller

- Go Nuts with Chef Bre, presented by the hospital's chef Breanna Vint

- Relaxation and Stress Management Techniques, GCMH Social Services manager Kristi Barnett

Both the Grundy County Farm Bureau and Wellness Coalition members are organizing the Wellness Fair. The Farm Bureau would like to encourage past participants of its Wellness Fair, usually held in March, to attend the Fair on January 12th since the Farm Bureau is combining efforts with the county wellness group for the 2013 event.
