Boys use momentum to earn convincing win

January 20, 2013
Emily Snider - Editorial Intern , Reinbeck Courier

Momentum is all it takes to pump up the crowd, players, and coaches. After a few three-pointers and steals, the Gladbrook-Reinbeck Rebels were able to pull away from the AGWSR Cougars on Friday, January 11th. The first quarter started out extremely slow with the teams combing for only 15 points. Both teams were just starting to get into their offenses the second quarter, where the Rebels outscored the Cougars to go into halftime with a 21 to 17 lead.

The third quarter was where the Rebels used their momentum to outscore the Cougars 19 to five. With great scoring also comes opportunities for the younger players to get some playing time. The Rebels have two freshmen and three sophomores on the roster this year. Friday night allowed a few more people to get a taste of Varsity basketball.

The Rebels were able to hold the Cougar's leading scorer Josh Bagley to only eight points. The Rebels were also able to hold the Cougars to two of 14 three-pointer attempts. Three-pointers were falling pretty well for the Rebels where they made six of 14 attempts. Camden Kickbush and Jacob Smoldt both had two, and Trevor Trunck and Joe Zimmerman both added one on the night. Trevor Trunk had a good night with four steals, two assists, three rebounds, and 12 points.

Leading with points was Smoldt (14), Kickbush (13), Trunck (12), and Pierce (10). Colton Dinsdale also served as a defensive presence for the Rebels just when they needed it. He finished the night with two steals for the Rebels. Steals are crucial because they change the momentum by leading to easy lay-ups on the other end. Rebounding was led by Camden Kickbush (6) and Zach Pierce (4). The Rebels were just clicking tonight and hope to continue to get some wins with some conference games coming up this next week.
