As a conclusion to the basketball unit in P.E., Coach Olson organizes a special event to celebrate the students' accomplishments. On February 15th all G-R students, kindergarten through 8th grade, gathered in the Gladbrook gym where students were recognized for most free throws (kindergarten & first grade winners were awarded a basketball), team efforts, shooting skills, and sportsmanship. 306 certificates were presented.
The G-R Middle School band, led by Mr. Reynolds, began the festivities with the G-R Fight Song. Announcer Mrs. Love presented the players for the Middle School (Joe Smoldt, Joe Pepe, Abby Smith, Jed Peterson, Marissa Berendes, Matt Roeding, Parker Bown, Alex Tscherter, and Kathryn Wild) and the players for the G-R Faculty (Coach Olson, Coach Charley, Mr. Williams, Ms. Erickson, Mr. Kuehl, Mrs. Egesdal, and Mr. Swenson). Referees for this year's game were Mr. McQuillen and Coach Brett Bengen. Mrs. King ran the scoreboard, Mrs. Ehlers and Mrs. Purvis led the cheers. Before the game could begin, Mrs. Love introduced Ms. Wheeler and Mr. Swenson; they sang a beautiful duet of the National Anthem.
More than 30 threes were shot during this year's game. The G-R Faculty made a lot of threes during warm-ups but they saved only three for the game. Eighth grader Joe Smoldt led all scorers with 23 points, making five of his threes. Leading the faculty in the MSH column (Make Something Happen) was Mrs. Egesdal for her "good hustle." Leading in the MSH column for the students was Matt Roeding with two key steals.
In the 12th Annual G-R Faculty-Middle School Game, the Faculty emerged the winner, beating the Middle School team 36 33.
