Typically when you meet someone for the first time, one of the very first questions you're asked is, "What do you do?" I like many of you have been asked this question numerous times. I always answer with, "I work for Grundy County Conservation. We take care of many parks and wildlife areas in Grundy County and I also help maintain and give tours in our museum in Morrison." I can't even count the amount of times that people respond with, "There is a museum in Morrison?" It's sad that more people haven't been to our museum and even more sad that they don't even know it's there.
Our museum is more formally called The Grundy County Heritage Museum and the theme of the main section is from grasslands to granaries. Our displays take you on a tour through time from when Grundy County was a sea of prairie grass to the development of agriculture showing how our landscape has changed over time. It features many animal displays that show the change in animal diversity over the years. It also has a 1900's general store, barn and house. We also have a variety of wagons, buggies and farm equipment from different time periods. If just looking at displays isn't your thing then you can try out our new touch screen video displays that have a variety of different videos. I have been to many county museums around the state that are similar to ours and I have to say ours is one of the best. I would really love for everyone in Grundy County to get a chance to see this great museum, and what better way than this coming Sunday for our annual open house.
Our annual open house is Sunday March 10th from 1:00 to 4:00 at the Heritage Museum in Morrison. Every year we have a speaker come and this years speaker is Darrel Draper. Darrel will be performing George Drouillard- Hunter, Interpreter, and Indian sign talker for Lewis and Clark. The performance will take place at 2:00 p.m. in the museum. His performance is being sponsored by the Historical Collections of Grundy County so there will be no charge to the public. In his performance Draper becomes George Drouillard and brings life to this famous half French half Shawnee Indian guide for the Lewis and Clark expedition. I have seen him give this performance and it is entertaining to say the least. He dresses up in full costume and does an excellent job. You don't want to miss this great chance to experience the Grundy County museum so come to Morrison this Sunday for some great entertainment.
