Summer facility upgrades to the GR school district

August 18, 2013
Reinbeck Courier

Summer time equals project time for the GR building and grounds crews. This summer has been exceptionally busy with many physical improvements to the school buildings. Last fall local voters showed tremendous support for the Gladbrook-Reinbeck district by approving an extension on the voter approved Physical Plant and Equipment Levy (PPEL). The school board then obtained a general obligation capital loan note against future voted PPEL revenues in the amount of $1,255,000. This capital loan note allowed the Gladbrook-Reinbeck school district to make many upgrades to their facilities.

Gladbrook campus upgrades include asbestos abatement in the office area, drop ceilings and LED lighting installed in the majority of the hallways, along with new treading in the stairways, while the lighting has been retrofitted on the stage. Asphalt overlaying on the north and west driveways and parking lots is expected to be finished by the start of the school year. Electrical sensors were also added to make the Gladbrook building more efficient.

Reinbeck Campus upgrades include asbestos abatement in the preschool area, efficient boilers with computerized controls have been installed in the elementary building, drop ceilings were added to high school classrooms, and a new security system was installed in the high school parking lot.

The largest summer project was a complete overhaul to the practice gym and locker rooms in the high school. Underground drainage and exhaust fans were added to prevent future moisture concerns. A new coat of paint to the area along with new shower stalls, lockers, a drop ceiling and LED lighting have all been added. The old gym floor has been completely removed with a new floor to be installed later in August.

Superintendent Shawn Holloway encourages readers to visit the Gladbrook-Reinbeck facebook page at to view photos of the facility improvements. Holloway commented the passing of the voter approved PPEL shows the great support and community pride for the GR school district. These improvements will help create a quality learning environment for the students and staff. The administration and school board appreciates the community for their outstanding support!
