Free smart choice health insurance program to be held Oct. 28 in two Grundy County locations

October 20, 2013
Reinbeck Courier

Do you need information to help you make a smart choice about health insurance? ISU Grundy County Extension & Outreach, in partnership with Kling Memorial Library and Dike Public Library will be offering FREE Extension programs which will address key health insurance terms and concepts, thinking about your health care needs, comparing policies, the new health insurance marketplace, premium tax credits and other cost reductions. The programs will be led by Brenda Schmitt, Extension Family Finance specialist, and will be non-commercial and non-political. They will introduce the new Health Insurance Marketplace what it is and how to use it - and will describe the cost reductions available to many Iowans through the Marketplace. Participants will also build information and skills for choosing a health insurance policy that fits their needs.

This program will be held at two locations on October 28, 2013. Program to be held at Kling Memorial Library in Grundy Center from 2-4 p.m. and Dike Public Library from 6-8 p.m. Pre-registration is strongly encouraged.

One in 10 Iowans lives without health insurance. Health care insurance is one way to manage the risk of financial loss and the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) is intended to expand affordable health care coverage to all Americans. Starting January 1, 2014, under the terms of the ACA, Americans will be required to purchase health insurance or pay a fine. However, 43% of Americans who are currently uninsured are unaware of this provision of the law. Recognizing the 334,200 Iowans who are uninsured and who will need assistance with understanding the complexities of health insurance coverage, ISUEO plans to leverage the Smart Choice program to improve health insurance literacy.

This program will be held free of charge for participants thanks to the generous partnership of Kling Memorial Library, Dike Public Library and the Grundy County Extension & Outreach office. To register for either the Kling Memorial Library location from 2-4 p.m. or the Dike Public Library location from 6-8 p.m. please call Shari at the Grundy County Extension office at 319-824-6979 or e-mail sellbakk@iastate.edu. Pre-registration is strongly encouraged.
