X-ray discovery day and radiologic technology week marked at GCMH

Grundy County Memorial Hospital is recognizing the important role that imaging plays in health care during Radiologic Technology Week, Nov. 3-9.

Medical imaging has changed dramatically since the X-ray was first discovered by German Physicist Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen on November 8, 1895. According to Craig Buskohl, Radiology Manager at GCMH, the difference medical imaging has made in patient care holds far-reaching significance. "Most people know that the X-ray is used to produce images of bones in the body," says Buskohl. "What people don't always realize is that X-rays are used in other highly sophisticated medical tests such as computed tomography scans, mammography and bone density testing."

Grundy County Memorial Hospital performs over 8,000 exams annually using advanced radiology systems, including mammograms, ultrasounds, CT scans, MRIs and general diagnostic radiology. The radiology department at GCMH includes Buskohl and six radiologic technologists.

"The X-ray's impact on patient outcomes and our ability to provide quality care is tremendous, allowing health care providers to quickly and accurately detect, diagnose and treat injury, illness and disease," says Buskohl. "We're excited to celebrate the work of the radiology department during this commemorative week."

The following types of medical imaging are available at Grundy County Memorial Hospital.

Computed Tomography (CT). Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Digital Radiography. Bone Densitometry (DEXA). Ultrasound. Digital Breast Imaging (Mammography). The mission of Grundy County Memorial Hospital is to improve the health of the people in the communities we serve.
