News from the Black Hawk Nighthawks

January 29, 2017
Reporter Lily Heinzel , Reinbeck Courier

The Black Hawk Nighthawks 4-H Club met for their first meeting of 2017 on Sunday, January 8th at the Reinbeck Elementary Library. We started the meeting with a guest speaker, Melissa Henrichs. She began with an activity and split the club into two groups. Each group was given baking sheets and paper cups, their goal was to assemble these items so one person in the group could stand on them and be taller than Melissa. After both groups had done this, we compared how each group used the items. Then, everyone worked together and used all of the supplies to make something so someone could touch the ceiling. Then Melissa talked about how the groups had the same goal, but different processes. These activities tied into how to write a good project goal for the fair as well the importance of putting your process (steps) into your write-ups for fair projects. Melissa shared her insights from being a former 4-H member and currently a club leader as well as a judge at county fairs.

The business meeting began with Kinzee Hemann leading the pledge of allegiance. The roll call was "share a project area you hope to do for next year's fair". Next, the treasurer's report was given. A "Thank You" card for Mike Rickert, who spoke to the club about making bread at the November meeting, was passed around for the members to sign. We thanked everybody for coming to the baking day in December. We discussed out bake sale and plan on having it on Saturday, February 11, 2017 from 10:00-1:00. We also talked about the "Bluebird Project" which involves making birdhouses for bluebirds and is being sponsored by "Our Iowa" magazine. State Recognition Applications are open to Iowa high school 4-H'ers and are due February 1st. Emma Fleshner led the 4-H pledge to end the business meeting. Cole Fleshner gave a presentation about how to make "Fluffy Eggs".

Our next meeting will be held on Sunday, February 12 at 5:00 at the Reinbeck Elementary.
