Volunteers needed for angel gown sewing project

June 15, 2017
Reinbeck Courier

GRUNDY CENTER, Iowa- Grundy County Memorial Hospital staff, volunteers, and community members will partner on Friday, July 7th to hold an Angel Gown Sew-in in Conrad. During the sew-in, volunteers will transform donated wedding gowns into angel gowns to be offered to parents who have lost a newborn baby. Individual gowns and a keepsake heart will be made available to parents through UnityPoint Health Waterloo. Volunteers with the project hope the gowns offer some comfort to parents who are grieving the loss of their infant.

The project will take place on Friday, July 7, 9:00 a.m. 2:00 p.m. at Hen & Chicks in Conrad. Volunteers are asked to bring their own sewing machines, fabric scissors, and needles. Donated wedding gowns and patterns will be available the day of the sew-in and an experienced angel gown seamstress will be present to assist. Hen & Chicks is graciously donating the space, and each volunteer is asked to pay $20 to cover the cost of the noon meal and snacks/drinks. Community volunteers are asked to sign up before July 7th so plans may be made for the meal and materials. To volunteer, please contact Erin Schildroth at 319-824-4147 or erin.schildroth@unitypoint.org. In addition to volunteer time from those who are able to sew, donations of the following craft and sewing items are being accepted for the angel gown project. Contact Schildroth if you are able to donate any of these sewing items: 1/4" or small buttons black, white, cream; 1/8" ribbon pastel colors; 100% cotton thread white, cream; 5/8" ribbon black, white, baby blue; Bias tape white, cream; Lace white, cream; Black satin fabric; Wonder under.
