GRUNDY CENTER, Iowa - Practical Farmers of Iowa in partnership with Grundy County Soil and Water Conservation District will host a free cover crop workshop on Wednesday, July 19, from 9 a.m. to noon, at the Grundy County Fairgrounds (1308 4th St.) in Grundy Center.

The event "Cover Crops: Different Methods for Different Folks" will take place in the Alumni Building at the fairgrounds, near the cattle barns, and includes a lunch featuring pork loin sandwiches, chips, bars and beverages. RSVPs are requested for the meal to Denise Freeseman, with Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) field office in Grundy County, at (319) 824-3634, ext. 3 or by Wednesday, July 12.

The field day is sponsored by Conservation Districts of Iowa, Grundy County Soil and Water Conservation District, Grundy County Extension and Iowa Learning Farms.

During the workshop, which takes place at the Grundy County Fair, attendees will learn about diverse cover crops, zone tillage, under- and interseeding cover crops, strip tillage, the impact of soil health on natural processes and establishing skip rows for next year's corn when planting cover crops.

Several farmers and soil health specialists will present planting methods that achieve different goals with cover cropping. Farmer speakers will also discuss diversifying cover crops with new varieties or planting at different times of the year, and their innovative strategies for limiting tillage. A soil health specialist from NRCS will discuss the science behind soil health benefits of cover crops. Admission is free to both the fair and the workshop.

Speakers will include Denny Winterboer, a farmer and entrepreneur from Everly; Loran Steinlage, a farmer from Fayette County; Chris Teachout, a farmer from Fremont County; and Doug Peterson, with NRCS. In addition, Alan Wedemeyer, with NRCS, will conduct soil nitrate testing during the workshop. Farmers are asked to bring in 2 cups of soil from their field to do the testing.

Directions: From the intersection of IA Hwy 14 and IA Hwy 175 in Grundy Center (near Rouse Motor), go south 5.5 blocks on 4th Street; the fairgrounds will be on the left. The event will be held in the Alumni Building near the cattle barns.
