Lily Heinzel , Reinbeck Courier

The Black Hawk Nighthawks 4-H Club had great representation at both the Grundy County and Iowa State Fairs. Our members participated in Livestock & Static (Non-Livestock) Exhibits & Communication Events at the Grundy County Fair which was held July 18-23. In the livestock area, we were represented at the Beef Show, Dairy Show, Sheep Show, Horse Show, Swine Show, Rabbit Show and Dog Show. There were lots of projects in the Static (Non-Livestock) building from our members including: Photography, Visual Arts, Consumer Management, Personal Development, Ag & Natural Resources, Animal Science, Food & Nutrition, Home Improvement, Woodworking and Clover Kid. Selected to go on to the Iowa State Fair were Audrey Leyen, (Photography & Personal Development), Lily Heinzel (Visual Arts), Sadie Brockett (Consumer Management) & Karly Wilhau (Ag & Natural Resources). We also had several other items considered for State Fair. We had members participate in two Communication Events with Kinzee Hemann performing a dance for Share the Fun and Lily Heinzel, Sadie Brockett & Paul Brockett teaming up for a Working Exhibit where they invited people to make magnet buddies. They were selected to take their Working Exhibit to the Iowa State Fair. Audrey Leyen was one of the County Fair Queen candidates this year. And alumni member, Kelly Brockett, returned to the fair this year as one of two recipients of the LuAnne Schreck Memorial Record Keeping Scholarship. This scholarship was developed to encourage youth to complete a 4-H record book during their years in 4-H.

Following our busy fair week, the club capped off the 4-H year by going to Lost Island Waterpark on Monday, July 24th for an afternoon of fun & relaxation.

We will start a new 4-H year with our first meeting on Sunday, September 10th at 5:00 p.m. at the Reinbeck Elementary.
