JV Rebel Football

October 8, 2017
Mike Bengen , Reinbeck Courier

It was a rainy Monday night at the Pit in Gladbrook. The Fresh-Soph 8 man Rebels were the closing act on a night when the Junior High started our night off with a bang defeating Baxter in a dominate display. Coach Rickert and Coach Formanek have been working these guys pretty hard and are reaping the benefits of a very much improved ball club. We had a tough act to follow.

We started off where the JH left off. We spent the whole first quarter on the Bolts side of midfield. We controlled every aspect of the first quarter as we stormed to a 30-0 lead after one. We added two more scores before the break and coasted in for a 44-0 halftime lead. There was not much to be said at the half as we were dominating in all facets of this game. After a safety and another TD and continuous clock, the Rebels marched on to an impressive 54-0 victory. We were solid as we averaged about 7 yards per play and only allowed 61 total yards compared to our 270. We forced 4 turnovers to aid our cause too. It was a dominate performance and these guys keep getting better each time they take the field. That again is impressive. We ask these kids to practice 11 man and then on Mondays play 8 man with about 30 minutes of preparation during the week. These guys have really responded and competed. This says a lot about our kids and their pride and dedication to the G-R football and our successful program. We all should be very proud of these young men and look forward to their future as a very good 8 man team.

Keagan Giesking led the way with 80 yards rushing and 3 scores and Eli Thede followed closely with 53 yards on the ground and his own 3 touchdowns. Lane Bach added 42 yards and a TD, Jace Perersen 24 yards, Aiden Wyatt 11, Kale Hasselmann 13, Danny Gleissner 4, and Cole Engel 3 round out our rushing stats. Keagan and Eli each completed 1 pass for our 39 yards passing. Eli, Lane, and Kale each added PAT conversion to our scoring column. Defensively we were led by Lane and Jace with 6 stops each. Sam Mussig and Aidan Walters 4, Kale 3, Eli 2, Aiden and Casey Knaack added a tackle each for our defense. Aiden also intercepted 2 balls and Eli 1. Kale recovered a fumble for the turnovers for the game. Auston Wittgreve had no stat line but as a center it is a bit difficult to accumulate stats. He had a very good night snapping the ball and blocking. On a wet night, the center is very important. His job is to snap that ball and Auston did a great job all night.

Our final action will be Monday October 9 at home against Tripoli at 6:00 p.m. Come out and see the future Rebels and their much improved 8 man football team. See you on the sidelines.
