Hudson snaps GR’s 29 game win streak 5-0

October 15, 2017

GLADBROOK - The elements and the opponent combined to make an insurmountable adversary.

Twenty hours after postponing their originally scheduled football game, Gladbrook-Reinbeck got bogged down by Hudson and a venue that truly resembled its nickname.

A sideways rain, slippery footballs, a whole lot of mud and a motivated foe delivered the Rebels their first defeat since 2015 as sixth-ranked Hudson knocked off No. 2 Gladbrook-Reinbeck 5-0 in a Class A District 5 clash in a quagmire Saturday at 'The Pit.'

The visiting Pirates ended G-R's 29-game winning streak dating back to Sept. 18, 2015, by capitalizing on the unsavory playing conditions with a ground-and-pound offense that provided just enough push to tip the battle for field position. Hudson (7-0, 5-0) also became the first team to hold Gladbrook-Reinbeck scoreless since Oct. 5, 2012, by pushing the Rebels' typically vaunted aerial assault backward.

The wind, rain and opposition were all too much for the Rebels (6-1, 4-1) on this day. Lightning prevented the game from beginning on Friday night, and Hudson kept G-R from ever getting started on Saturday.

The two-time defending Class A champions came away with minus-17 yards of offense, while Hudson dominated at the point of attack. The Pirates put the ball in the hands of tailback Christian Seres 46 times for 154 yards, though neither team found the end zone.

Wes Geisler kicked a 39-yard field goal for Hudson on the final play of the first half, and G-R punter Walker Thede was ruled down while fielding a low snap in his own end zone with 1:54 left in the fourth quarter.

The Pirates pushed the ball inside G-R's 20-yard-line twice, including the final drive as time expired, while Gladbrook-Reinbeck failed to move the chains during the entire game. The Rebels' best scoring chances were turned back by an aggressive Hudson defense that knew G-R's prolific passing attack would have a hard time taking flight.

G-R senior defensive back Cael Wyatt picked off a Jacob Murray pass near midfield late in the first quarter and appeared to have a path carved out toward the end zone until Murray cut him off, bringing Wyatt down at the 14 with an apparent ankle injury. He was carted off, and the Rebel offense went backward 5 yards before turning the ball over on downs.

Late in the third quarter, Geisler's 45-yard field-goal attempt was well short into a westerly wind, and Thede caught the ball shy of the goal line and returned it 38 yards. But the Hudson defense pushed G-R backward 7 yards, and the Rebels never got the ball near midfield again.

Matt Johannsen had the only plus-yardage reception for the Rebels, hauling in an 11-yard wobbler from Lott, and Josh Peterson's lone carry went for 4 yards to lead G-R. Lott finished 2-for-10 for 6 yards with one interception. Both teams turned the ball over three times.

Mason Skovgard led the Rebel defense with 10 total tackles (2 solo, 16 assist), while Rhett Barnes had 8.5 tackles and Kyle Koppen had 8 stops.

The Rebels will host Belle Plaine (6-1, 5-0) next Friday night in another pivotal district matchup.
