Operation Threshold taking limited applications for energy assistance

October 22, 2017
Reinbeck Courier

Black Hawk, Buchanan and Grundy County's Operation Threshold is taking limited LIHEAP applications from households with a member that is age 60 or over or has a disability.

The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) income eligibility limit for the program remains at 175% of the Federal poverty level this year program.

All other households may apply beginning November 1st.

Each applicant will need to provide proof of social security number for all household members (unless proof is already on file with Operation Threshold). Applicants will also need to bring proof of all household members' gross income for the past 30 days and copies of their most recent heating and electric bills. Per LIHEAP requirements, applicants will be required to meet with an Operation Threshold staff person as needed.

The program is funded by the Department of Health and Human Services through the Iowa Department of Human Rights/Department of Community Action Agencies, and has been established to help qualifying low-income Iowa homeowners and renters pay for a portion of their primary heating costs. This program is not designed to pay a household's total energy costs. The program will provide supplemental assistance based on several factors. Those factors include total household income, household size, dwelling type, and type of heating fuel, among others.

All low-income Iowans are encouraged to apply, including senior citizens and individuals with disabilities. Eligibility for participation is established according to the following federal income guidelines.

Assistance is dependent upon the agency's receipt of funds and will be provided on a first-come, first-serve basis. Applications will be accepted through April 30, 2018.
