Reinbeck Public Library centennial celebrations

January 14, 2018
Reinbeck Courier

The Reinbeck Public Library is celebrating its Centennial year during the whole year of 2018. The current building was open in November of 1917 so the library is celebrating 100 years of service to Reinbeck and the surrounding area. A logo contest was announced in December to create a design to put on totes to be given out during the year. Wesley Latchman was the winner. One hundred golden tickets will be hidden in the library and patrons who find one will receive one of the Centennial items as a gift.

Plans are being made for other special events each month. On Fri, January 12 (19th if bad weather) at 2:00 p.m. Shana Stuart, the director of the Carnegie Libraries in Iowa Project will give a presentation on the history of our library. The event will be held at Westview Estates and the public is welcome to attend. For the month of January there will be a display at the library of some of the original books from the 1917 library as well as miscellaneous historical items.

On Saturday, Feb. 3 the library will be hosting "Take your Child to the Library Day." This is a national event that last year had libraries participate from 46 of the 50 states. The library will have a special Storytime that morning at 10:00 with special guest readers from some of our favorite books. There will be a photo booth as well as face painting. Any child who comes in anytime that day (11 4) will receive a free book.

On March 3, the library will take a "Look Back." Come anytime between 11 4 for cookies and coffee while looking at the many, many scrapbooks kept here at the library. Many of the scrapbooks show the history of Reinbeck through personal accounts from some of the earliest settlers. There is also one devoted to the Reinbeck Theater Guild and a collection of "That's Interesting" articles written by Verne Paustian.

There will be something special each month of the year so stay tuned for more information. Also the librarians would love to hear your library stories. If you have memories to share don't hesitate to write them down and give to one of the librarians.
