James Dougherty, 89, Reinbeck, passed away Wednesday, August 15, 2018, at Parview Manor. Visitation was held Sunday, August 19, 2018 at Parrot & Wood Chapel of Memories, Waterloo. A private graveside service at Hudson Cemetery will be held at a later date. Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice. Condolences may be left at www.parrotandwood.com. James Dougherty was born on May 5, 1929 in Bicknell, Indiana to James and Pearl (Mackey) Dougherty. He grew up in Princeton, Indiana. James married the love of his life, Maudie Compton, on April 16, 1949 in Mt. Carmel, Illinois. In 1951, James enlisted in the United States Air Force and served for 4 years before his honorable discharge. He also received the Good Conduct Medal during his time of service. After his time in the Air Force, James attended tech school in Indiana for drafting. James and Maudie moved to Waterloo, where he accepted a job at John Deere as a draftsman, retiring in 1984. The couple also welcomed four girls into their family and later moved to Hudson. James had a passion for air planes and flight. He was a private pilot: flying and teaching others the skill. He was also an active member of the Reinbeck American Legion. He is preceded in death by his parents; a half-brother: Morris Frye; a half-sister: Marjorie Whitfield; and a son-in-law: David Meggers. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 69 years: Maudie Dougherty; four daughters: Karen (David) Broeker of Gilbert, AZ, Diane Meggers of Buckingham, Rhonda (Robert) Gutknecht of Reinbeck, and Linda (Lon) Boyers of Mooresville, Indiana. James is also survived by 6 grandchildren: Joshua (Danielle) Meggers, Rebekka Broeker, Nicole Hanson, Amanda Hanson, Kayla Gutknecht, and Jennifer Gutknecht; and one great granddaughter; Zooey Meggers.
