News from the Black Hawk Nighthawks 4-H Club

The Black Hawk Nighthawks 4-H Club has wrapped up another great year. There was great club representation at both the Grundy County Fair in July and the Iowa State Fair in August. Our members participated in Livestock & Static (Non-Livestock) Exhibits and Communication Events at the Grundy County Fair which was held July 17-22. In the Livestock area, we had members in the Beef Show, Swine Show, Sheep & Bottle Lamb Show and Horse Show. Projects in the Static (Non-Livestock) building from our members were in many categories including: Visual Arts, Photography, Woodworking, Horticulture, Sewing & Needle Arts, Food & Nutrition, Home Improvement, Ag & Natural Resources, Personal Development.& Clover Kids. Selected to go on the Iowa State Fair were: Karly Wilhau in Animal Science (Sheep Shearing poster), Sadie Brockett & Cameron Sieh in Photography & Sadie Brockett with two projects in Personal Development/Self-Determined (Grundy County Barn Quilts & Packing for College). Paul Brockett had a photo selected as a State Fair Alternate. The following members had projects Considered for State Fair or Outstanding Junior: Dylinn Blohm, Kael Blohm, Kennedy Brant, Paul Brockett, Sadie Brockett, Emma Fleshner, Gabe McMartin, Elly Sieh, Gwen Sommerfelt, Cameron Sieh, & Karly Wilhau. In the Communications Event, Share the Fun, Kinzee Hemann performed a dance. Many of our members also participated with their animals at the Iowa State Fair. Club member, Sadie Brockett, was honored to be the recipient of the Drew Scott Memorial Scholarship during the Drew Scott Memorial Sheep Show. Many of the previous scholarship recipients were also in attendance. Between the busy fair weeks, the club, along with family and friends, capped off the 4-H year with a visit to Adventureland on Thursday, August 2nd. Audrey Leyen’s family graciously helped with transportation with their RAGBRAI bus. Those members able to attend were: Allen Baker, Kennedy Brant, Paul & Sadie Brockett, Audrey Leyen, Mailea McLean, Desi Ruttman, Gwen & Aubrynn Sommerfelt. We will start a new 4-H year with our first meeting on Sunday, September 9th at 5:00 at the Reinbeck Elementary.
