If I were to ask you to take a picture of what Iowa was to you and send it to me I bet I would get all different kinds of pictures. I'm sure I would receive beautiful pictures of rolling corn fields and farmers during harvest still working at sunset. Or simply a small town main street with the courthouse in the background. Some of you might even send me pictures of downtown city lights. If you were to ask me to take a picture of Iowa it might look like a beautiful prairie in the spring when all the flowers are blooming or I might try to get the perfect shot of wood ducks lifting off the water on a cool fall morning. Iowa means different things to all of us and we all call it home. You can't really go wrong with any picture you take but the county conservation system (ALL 99 COUNTIES) needs your help in show casing what we bring to the table in Iowa. And we need your selfie skills.

Iowa County Conservation Boards (IACCB) have struggled for years to have their own identity. To this day, people I've known for years still say I work for the DNR. Most people don't know that all 99 counties have conservation boards and as a whole we have a VAST network of campgrounds, wildlife areas, museums, nature centers.. The list goes on and on. Think of right here in Grundy County we have campgrounds, wildlife areas and museums all run by your county conservation. Now imagine all 99 counties and all we have to offer as a whole. The struggle isn't providing these opportunities for the public, the struggle is getting the public to know we're even here.

All of Iowa's county conservation boards are trying to promote getting out into our parks this summer by asking you to do something that I know most of you do on a daily basis we need you to take a selfie. Every county will have a selfie station set up in one of their parks that will allow you to take a picture with a cool back drop. Wait.. Back up! What the heck is a selfie station? The station is has a wooden cut out of Iowa mounted on a pole with a ledge to place your phone on. You set your phone on the ledge, set the timer on your phone and take a picture with just you or include friends and family. All with a beautiful back drop of a County Conservation area. After taking the picture make sure to #Thisisiowa and post it to whatever social media site you use. You can also #mycountyparks so all the county conservation boards can enjoy them too.

Each County will choose a selfie station location that they think will best show off one of their areas. Grundy Counties will be put up in the near future at the Grundy County Lake. There will be signs at the stations giving you instructions. More information is available at I hope you all get out this summer and show off your selfie skills at a County Conservation park near you!
