10 YEARS AGO MAY 10, 2009 G-R students raise money for the Am. Cancer Society by doing a mini Relay for Life at the elementary school on May 15. Amanda Harrison will graduate on May 27 and has been accepted to Hawkeye College for the Correction Program. Laurene Knaack will celebrate her 90th birthday with a card shower. Mary Lou Henderson celebrated her 90th birthday on May 24, Lois Clark, 73, died May 16 at the Cedar Valley Hospice House. A benefit will be held on June 7 for Katy Lynk who was injured in a serious car accident just before Christmas 2008. Jessica Eilers R.N., B.S.N. is a recipient of 100 Great Iowa Nurses. She was honored on May 3. 20 YEARS AGO MAY 20, 1999 Lincoln Savings Bank takes over Nashua Bank effective June 1. Commencement to be held Sunday May 23 with 51 graduates. G-R places 3rd in trap shooting contest. While vacationing in Mexico on Dec. 14 Bob Greiner landed a 100 lb. 8 ft. long sailfish. It took him 30 minutes to land the catch. Steve Petersen, formerly to Reinbeck, now of Fort Lee, VA. was promoted to Captain where he is attending the U.S. Army Logistics Management College. Elizabeth Mills & Adam Boege are planning a June 3 wedding at the UCC Church in Reinbeck. Irina Moye from Nishny-Novogrod, Russia. has been adopted by Vince & Julie Moye. Melissa Stull has been nominated as “Best of Class” by KWWL-TV. Robert Kubik, Huson, is one of 780 candidates to receive his bachelor in Exercise Athletics training at Buena Vista University. Frances Hopkins, 78. Morrison , died May 14 at Allen Hospital. Dwayne Street, 85, Gladbrook, died May 13 at the Marshalltown Hospital. 30 YEARS AGO MAY 11, 1989 Christine Sievers received “Best of Class” award. Paula Petersen and Troy Holman received the Verlyn Rysdam Award on May 24, Raymond Jacobs, 77, Gladbrook, died May 21 of a heart condition. Dave Roberts, Chief of Reinbeck Fire Dept. accepted a check for $570 which was raised in Traer for the Reinbeck Fire Dept. A million bottle caps were collected by Reinbeck 5th graders. The project was to see what a million bottle caps looked like. 40 YEARS AGO MAY 31, 1979 Reinbeck swimming pool opened with .10 cent swim day. Sherrill Roberts, 39, was flown to Iowa City by Air Care Emergency Unit following a stroke at his home. Mike Molstead, Reinbeck, high school junior, placed 4th in state Class 1A golf competition. 50 YEARS AGO MAY 29, 1969 Jo Ruth Hunter named valedictorian and Susan Keith named salutatorian of 1969 class. Pauline Selc, 75, died May 26 at Schoitz Hospital. Dr. Albert Ploog, 71, died at Allen Hospital. Mr. & Mrs. Allen Lewis are parents of a daughter born May 13. Mr. & Mrs. Roger Newell are parents of a daughter born May 26. Sandra Richter, 8, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Kenny Richter, was chosen as Miss Poppy of 1969.
