GRUNDY CENTER – With the start of the new year comes the expansion of public transportation service in Grundy County. The Iowa Northland Regional Transit Commission (RTC) is now providing additional demand/response transportation to anyone who needs it. RTC operates twenty light duty buses and provides regional transportation in Black Hawk and surrounding counties. Expanding service in Grundy County meets a need for a public transportation option locally. The Grundy County service is available to everyone and is fully accessible for those with disabilities. Service is available Monday through Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. “We provide public transportation to everyone,” remarks Ben Kvigne, Director of Transit for the Regional Transit Commission. “Individuals, families, senior citizens, children – all are eligible to use the service, although we prefer that children under the age of 12 be accompanied by an adult. The bus is available to take people to Waterloo, Cedar Falls, Marshalltown, and other areas or to take people from throughout Grundy County to medical appointments or other destinations within the county.” There is a standard fee of $1.25 per mile for the service, with a $5 minimum per ride. Those who are eligible for Medicaid may have their ride fee reimbursed by their health insurer. The transportation service is funded through state transit assistance and federal transit agency funding, in addition to fares. Kvigne says any local business or organization may contact RTC to set up a payment option for their clients or customers. For more information and to reserve a ride time, contact the Regional Transit Commission at 319-233-5213 or 1-800-369-3022 Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Rides should be scheduled at least 24-hours in advance.
